This course was very helpful. I was provided with materials such as textbook and handouts that supported me with additional grammar structures and vocabulary. This helped me write my capstone scripts and papers in Japanese due to this class expanding my Japanese proficiency. The class went over homework together, correcting as groups. Also, through entertaining methods, such as holding up multiple choice signs, to choose the correct answers helped me understand the structure of Japanese sentences more deeply. I truly feel all these new grammar structures has made me an intermediate to advance Japanese writer. Before this class, I felt like my vocabulary and grammar was of a elementary level. I'm able to complete more advance Japanese sentences.
The difficulty of this course was pretty high for me, personally. There were many Japanese grammar structures that had the same meaning but are used in different contexts. It was very challenging. Constantly I made mistakes of using the wrong grammar structure. With the help of my classmates and Professor Sekine, I developed the understanding of the different contexts and began to comprehend the minor differences of each structure. Some grammar structures were repetition from previous courses I've taken a few years ago but, this course went into much more in depth. For example, we learned how to use tenego, keigo, and sankego which are language forms that are formal or humble or casual when speaking to your superiors. Other than the grammar structures, I studied for kanji quizzes and oral and written exams.
Professor Sekine did an excellent job reviewing and preparing me for the various exams; she's given me the necessary tools and handouts for me to practice before the quizzes and exams. Also, Professor Sekine always managed her time to fit me into her schedule when I needed more assistance on particular Japanese lessons. I would definitely suggest this course to other students because my vocabulary and syntax analysis of creating and comprehending the Japanese language improved drastically.
