Short Narrative (When and how I came to CSUMB and how I became a Japanese major)
I was a Junior transfer student from Humboldt State University. Due to budget cuts, I lost my softball scholarship and had to drop out for work. In Spring 2011, CSUMB accepted me to be one of their OTTERS! Immediately, I decided to join a sorority, Lambda Sigma Gamma. This organization helped me become the strong, independent woman I am today. I have already changed my major twice before entering CSUMB. First semester at this school, I changed my major again, to history. However, it's required to take two semesters of language. Therefore, I chose Japanese; something unique. I did great in Japanese 101: Beginning Japanese I. Sekine Sensei told me that I, "sounded natural; you're really good in Japanese." It was those exact words that made me, once again, change my major to Japanese language and culture. To others, changing my major because of one compliment seemed a little 'out there' but, at the time, I was so confused of what path I wanted to take. I was willing to try many paths in order to find what I liked.
